A new phase in European defence cooperation around modern simulation technologies

The European Defence Agency’s (EDA) Modern Army Readiness with Simulation (MARS) working group met in Budapest on 25–26 February, bringing together experts from ten European member states as well as NATO specialists to discuss the role of advanced simulation in military training.

The initiative focuses on aligning modern training technologies across countries – particularly solutions based on virtual and augmented reality – while strengthening interoperability between different national systems.

In 2025, the EDA entrusted the Defence Innovation Research Institute (VIKI) with leading the working group. The role is carried out by Gergely Kovács, head of XR/AR research at VIKI.
