From Drone Technology to Soldier Support

How can Hungarian innovation meet the needs of troops in the field—from reconnaissance and casualty evacuation to reliable food supplies? This was the focus of the Defence Innovation Showcase, jointly organised by VIKI, Hungary’s Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Defence Forces on 16–17 October 2026 at the Nullpont firing range and training area.

Nearly fifty Hungarian companies took part in the two-day programme, presenting their developments directly to military users. Exhibitions and live demonstrations offered an opportunity to examine drone and counter-drone technologies, alongside aerial and ground systems designed for a range of operational tasks.

Meeting soldiers’ everyday needs was equally important. Hungarian-developed meals ready to eat (MREs) highlighted opportunities to modernise field rations, while discussions with food producers provided insight into the products and manufacturing capacity available to support military catering.

The opening day centred on static displays and exhibitions. Defence Minister Dr Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi and General Zsolt Sándor, Chief of the Defence Staff, visited every exhibitor’s tent together, continuing into the evening. The following day brought the equipment into action, with demonstrations of aerial and ground platforms as well as counter-drone systems.

Both leaders emphasised the importance of building on domestic expertise. The Minister highlighted the need to meet more defence requirements through Hungarian production, while General Sándor called for military leaders to assess the solutions presented and support initiatives with clear potential for practical use.

VIKI works to connect Hungarian innovation with the requirements of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The showcase advanced this mission by providing a forum for developers and military personnel to exchange experience, discuss operational needs and strengthen cooperation.

We thank the participating companies, military professionals, organising partners and all contributors for their commitment, valuable insights and collaborative effort throughout the event.
